Church History
100 Years of Ministry
In 1897, two Mennonite ministers, Isaac D. Hertzler of Maryland and D.Z. Yoder of Ohio, purchased 1200 acres of the Denbigh Plantation from the Yound family. The Warwick River church began with these two Mennonite farm families. Another dozen soon joined them from these and other states, carving individual farms out of those original 1200 acres along the Warwick River. Over the years the farms gave way to suburbia, and the congregation has been enriched by members from many backgrounds.
As the “colony” developed, member families built a church on the river side of Lucas Creek Road where the cemetery still lies. An elementary school began in the church basement in 1941, then moved across the road in 1949. The church facility rose beside the school in 1961. Further enlargement of the school building coincides with our centennial year.
The athletic fields and youth building behind the church have hosted multiple youth activities. More recently, that building became headquarters for Warwick River Christian Childcare which is operated by the Warwick River Christian School.
